Waterville, ME –
Gavin Kane, previously the Women's Basketball program's Head NCBBA Women's Basketball Coach and Assistant NCAA Women's Basketball Coach, has been promoted to Thomas College's Head NCAA Women's Basketball Coach.
Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics
Christopher Parsons stated "Since joining our team Gavin has consistently shown professionalism, passion, strong leadership, and a deep commitment to collaborate. His work with both the NCAA and NCBBA Women's Basketball programs has had a meaningful and lasting impact. I have no doubt he'll continue to bring the same energy, vision, and dedication we've all come to appreciate."
Kane has had success at all levels of coaching basketball, including 28 years at the High School varsity level, three years as a NCAA Division III Assistant Coach on the collegiate level both at Thomas and at the University of Maine Farmington, two years as an NCAA Division I Assistant Coach for the University of Maine, and seven years as an Assistant Athletic Director and Head Women's Basketball Coach at the University of Maine Presque Isle – where he earned three consecutive North Atlantic Conference playoff appearances.
Rising senior captain
Elena Alderman said "Coach Kane was a huge asset to our team last year in his assistant role on every level. He brings endless basketball knowledge to the table and cares deeply about his players. This program and its players couldn't be any luckier to now have him as our head coach. His years of experience coaching, care, and love for the game will help this program succeed now and, in many years to come."
Kane is a member of both the Maine Basketball Hall of Fame (2020) and the New England Basketball Hall of Fame (2013). He has earned several MABC and Conference Coach of the Year awards throughout his career and has helped to develop and recruit several notable NCAA Division I athletes.
When asked about what his short term and long-term goals for program are, Kane had this to say: "We have a very solid group returning and I look forward to working with them. I have the utmost confidence in the players and what we can accomplish." "One of my main short-term goals on the court will be to become a more consistent team on the defensive end of the floor. I have always been a coach who puts great emphasis on defense. Long-term goals will be to work towards winning a NAC Championship while having student-athletes who are great in the classroom and great role models on campus."
Kane wanted to thank VP of Intercollegiate Athletics
Christopher Parsons, the athletic department administration, and the college administration for entrusting him in running the Women's Basketball program. He is looking forward to continuing to work with both the student athletes and staff.
