Terriers Down Pilgrims in Conference Doubleheader

WATERVILLE, ME – Thomas College was able to pick up two wins in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) doubleheader against New England College. The Terriers took game one 2-0 and won the night cap 7-6.
GAME ONE
Thomas took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first with a single from Derek Kane scoring Anree Benitez. Tim Locke was on the mound for the Terriers, not allowing a hit until the top of the fifth, a single from Kevin Caputo.
The Terriers would add an insurance run in the bottom half of the fifth inning, a single from Joe Quinlin scoring Nate Peasley. That's all Locke would need, as he went on to throw a complete game, two hit shutout, walking one and striking out nine.
Jordan Hubbard went the distance for the Pilgrims, allowing two runs on four hits, walking three and striking out four.
GAME TWO
 
NEC started off the scoring early on a sacrifice fly from Vincent Backert scoring Hubbard. The Pilgrims added another run on a single from Eric Johnson to bring around Francesco DiRe. The Terriers cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the inning on a single from Kane scoring Nik Beeson.
The Terriers tied the game up in the bottom of the second on a passed ball, bringing home CJ Pendleton. NEC took control in the top of the third, scoring three runs to take a 5-2 lead. Thomas cut the lead to 5-3 in the bottom of the frame with a single from Kam Nelson scoring Kane. Beeson tacked on another run with a sacrifice fly to center, allowing Benitez to tag and score.
The Pilgrims loaded the bases in the top half of the sixth inning, but could only push one run across coming on a hit by pitch. NEC took a 6-4 lead into the bottom half of the inning. The Terrier bats came alive in the bottom of the inning.With two outs, Benitez singled and stole second base.  Joe Quinlin singled to drive Benitez home. With two runners on, Tim Locke hit a double to right field driving in both runs and gave Thomas the 7-6 lead.
Taylor Bacon recorded the victory for the Terriers, throwing 1.2 scoreless innings and striking out one. Christopher Smith pitched six innings, allowing seven runs on 12 hits, walking two and striking out two in the losing effort.
Thomas returns to action, at home, on Monday April 21 when they take on the Bowdoin Polar Bears in a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 3:00 PM.​
