Box Score WATERVILLE, ME – The Thomas field hockey team used a strong defensive effort to take down the University of Maine at Farmington 2-0 on Senior Day at Bernatchez Field.
The win secures the second seed and a home game in next week's NAC Playoffs.
The Terriers (7-9, 4-1 NAC) got on the board quickly when Erica Blake took a pass from Brooklyn Curry and fired a shot past Beavers goalkeeper Patricia Smith in the 7th minute to give Thomas the only goal of the first half.
It was the sixth goal of the year for Blake, now tied for third on the team this season.
Thomas controlled the action in the first half as they held a 12-2 shot advantage over UMF (7-6, 3-2 NAC), as well as a 9-5 advantage in penalty corners. Terrier goalkeeper Abbie Charrier made two saves in net in the first half. Smith recorded seven for the Beavers.
Thomas started quickly in the second half, as Taylor Bergeron scored her seventh goal of the season off an assist from Brittany Premo just 32 seconds in to extend the lead to 2-0.
The Terriers were able to hold off the Beavers offensive attack in the second half to close them out for the shutout. Thomas finished the day with a 16-6 shot advantage over UMF, with 11 coming on goal.
Charrier finished with four saves for the Terriers, earning the shutout. Smith had eight stops for the Beavers.
The field hockey team will now face a rematch with the University of Maine at Farmington next Saturday, November 1 in the NAC Semifinals.
