Box Score WATERVILLE, ME - Senior Brittany Premo scored the game-winning goal at 8:32 in the second overtime to propel Thomas (6-9, 3-1 NAC) to a 4-3 victory over Castleton (1-12, 1-3) in a North Atlantic Conference game on Saturday afternoon at Bernatchez Field.
The Terriers struck first in the 13th minute when Abigail Dunn made a drive towards the goal and put her shot past goalkeeper Jess Galatioto to give the Terriers the 1-0 lead.
Ten minutes later, Castleton found the tying goal when Haley Spittle found Kristy Pinkham off a penalty corner to even the score up at one.
The Spartans again were set up with a penalty corner, and Spittle looked for Pinkham once more and she was able to find the net again, to put Castleton up 2-1. That score would hold into halftime, as Thomas held an 8—4 shot advantage with six on goal to just three for the Spartans.
The Terriers came out strong in the second half, as Taylor Bergeron fought past a Spartan defender and got it by goalkeeper Meeghan Doris to knot the game up at two.
Thomas kept it going, as Abigail Dunn took a penalty corner and got it to Erin Nelligan who fired a hard shot to the left side of the net for her second goal of the season, and Thomas took the lead back, 3-2.
In the 52nd minute, Castleton notched the equalizer off a penalty corner as Pinkham scored her third goal of the game on the assist by Cassidy Auger to tie the game back up at three.
Both teams had opportunities that were missed to grab the leads, but neither could capitalize and the 3-3 score would through regulation.
In the first overtime, Thomas was unable to take advantage of a five-minute yellow card on Castleton, as the Spartans held up defensively and stopped all Terrier opportunities. Abbie Charrier made a crucial save on a Castleton game-winning bid. The game would go scoreless and head into a second overtime.
Just over seven minutes into overtime number two, Brittany Premo broke away from the defense and put the game-winning shot by the Castleton goalkeeper to seal the Terrier win.
Thomas outshot Castleton 28-12 on the day, with 17 of their shots on goal. Thomas also held a 21-10 penalty corner advantage.
Charrier recorded four saves in goal for the Terriers, and Doris led the Spartans with 10.
The Thomas field hockey team will close out their regular season next Saturday, October 25 when they host the University of Maine at Farmington at 11am.
