Box Score WATERVILLE, ME - The Thomas men's soccer team overcame two one-goal deficits in the second half to earn a 2-2 draw against in-town rival Colby on Wednesday evening. Khamisi Lightbourne scored both Terrier goals on a couple of dazzling displays that pleased the onlookers at Smith Field.
The match started off slowly as the first shot was not recorded until 11:46 in to the first half on a wide left miss by Dakota Duplissie. Colby then began to pressure the Thomas defense and test goalkeeper Joakim Sternas, who would make three first half saves.
With just under four minutes to play in the half, the Mules struck for the game's first goal, when Charlie Dupee received a pass from teammate Keith Chernin and put it by Sternas for the 1-0 lead. Colby would take that lead into halftime, where they outshot Thomas 8-2.
The Terriers (5-2-2, 2-0-1 NAC) would waste little time evening up the score in the second half, as Khamisi Lightbourne would use some skilled dribbling to set up his shot that darted by goalkeeper John Pappas to tie the match up at one.
Less than nine minutes later, Dupee would strike again, this time on a dish from Matt Ayers that would beat Sternas for his team-leading fourth goal of the season to take back the lead for the Mules.
Thomas once again would fight back and have an answer, as Lightbourne would notch goal number two on the night, once again using his dribbling to set up a powerful right footed kick that beat Pappas top right. The Terriers offense played much better in the second half, holding a slight edge in shots 8-7.
The competiteness rose as the game drew closer to the end of regulation, as multiple players received cards, including a red for Thomas. Another would be handed out in overtime.
The Mules (5-3-1) controlled the two ten-minute overtime sessions, keeping Thomas without a shot as they played a man down. Sternas made three of his 10 saves in the overtimes to secure the draw.
The men's soccer team will finish the regular season with six straight North Atlantic Conference matches, starting at home versus Lyndon on Saturday, October 4 at 3:30pm.
