Box Score WATERVILLE, ME – Playing in their second consecutive overtime match, the Thomas (4-3-1) men's soccer team shutout Bowdoin (1-2-2) in a scoreless draw Friday night. Neither team could find the net in the first match between the two in-state schools in over 10 years, as a defensive battle ended in a 0-0 tie throughout 110 minutes.
Junior Dakota Duplissie fired a shot on net just outside the box in the 28th minute of the first that was Thomas' best look on frame of the half. Bowdoin had control in the early stages, keeping the ball in the attacking half for most of the opening stanza.
The Polar Bears had 11 shots in the second half, but couldn't find a winner thanks in part to a composed Thomas defense. Mikkail Crockwell preserved the draw with a clutch save in the 77th minute, stopping a shot from Zach Danssaert that was punched over the cross bar.
Guled Guled nearly created a last minute thriller for the home side, receiving a cross from Paul Rechichi that he shot just wide right of the Bowdoin keeper Will Wise.
During the first overtime Duplissie again would be stoned by Wise at 96:07, finding a through ball just inside the box that went right into the keepers hands.
In the concluding overtime period, Bowdoin was a Thomas defender away from sealing a victory. Cedric Charlier was able to get behind Crockwell only to find his shot blocked by Lukas Bohman just off the goal line. Neither team would be able to find the back of the net in the closing minutes, with the clock hitting zeros and both defenses deserving of a draw in the physical battle.
Duplissie led the squad in shots with six, while Danssaert had a game-high nine for the Polar Bears.
Crockwell made 11 saves in his third clean sheet of the season, while his counterpart Wise had two saves in the draw.
Bowdoin finished the game with a 24-10 advantage in shots and an 8-4 edge in corner kicks.
With the draw, Thomas improves to 8-1-2 in the history of the series with Bowdoin, which began in the 1989 season but was idle since 1999.
The Terriers return to the pitch on Oct. 2, meeting crosstown rival Colby in their eighth road game of the season. Start time between Thomas and the Mules is set for 4pm.
