Box Score

WATERVILLE, ME – Thomas (4-4-1) was unable to bring home the Elm City Bowl, falling to crosstown rival Colby (3-4), 2-1 in the annual men's soccer contest.

The two teams were even for much of the first half and the game stayed scoreless behind some solid stops from both goalkeepers. Cody Funkhouser made five of his eight stops in the first half for Colby.  Mikkail Crockwell also played well and made seven of his 10 saves in the first half for the away side.

Colby went up 1-0 on an own goal by Thomas. The Mules had a throw-in deep in Terriers territory and had the look of a corner kick on the play. The long toss was headed by Tim Stanton through the goal mouth, where a Thomas player tried to clear the ball and mistakenly went into the goal at 43:00.

Instead of being down after the goal, Thomas struck back with just 16 seconds left in the half. After a foul by Colby, Thomas back Paul Rechichi tapped in a shot that had come off the left goal post. Sophomore midfielder Joshua Phelps was credited with an assist.

After the two teams battled to a 1-1 tie at halftime, Nate Tolman took a feed from junior midfielder Keith Chernin and tallied the game winner for Colby at 67:08 of the second half.

The Mules had a 24-16 shot margin and a 4-2 edge in corner kicks. The teams, in what is normally a physical game, had a combined 30 fouls and two yellow cards.

With the victory, Colby has taken home the bowl the past three seasons, dating back to the 2011 campaign.

Thomas returns to conference play over the weekend, making their New Hampshire swing to Colby-Sawyer on Saturday and New England College on Sunday.
