NECBA Club Baseball Drops Doubleheader to Talented Tufts Club Team

Waterville, Maine - NECBA Club Baseball hosted the Tufts University Club Baseball team for a 7-inning doubleheader on Saturday, October 4th, but would fall to the Jumbos in both contests by scores of 4-9, and 9-10.


Game 1: NECBA Club 4, Tufts Club 9

How it Happened:
  • Wyatt Smith and Vincent Pavonetti would pitch for the Terriers in game one.
  • The Jumbos would strike first in the top of the first inning scoring 3 runs, but the Terriers would respond in the bottom of the 1st inning with two runs of their own to make it a 2-3 game.
  • The Jumbos would extend their lead in the top of the 2nd and 3rd inning with 5 combined runs.
  • The Terriers would make it 4-8 game in the bottom of the 5th inning scoring two runs. 
  • But it the Jumbos would ultimately score another late run and hang on to hand the Terriers a 4-9 loss.
  • Dereck Martin would lead the Terriers offense in game one, going 3-4 with one run scored.
Game 2: NECBA Club 9, Tufts Club 10

How it Happened:
  • The Terriers would strike first in the bottom of the 1st inning to take an early 1-0 lead.
  • But the Jumbos would find a response in the top of the 2nd and 3rd innings, combining for nine runs to make it a 1-9 game in favor of Tufts.
  • But the Terriers would continue to keep the bats going in the second half of the 3rd inning, scoring 5 runs to slice into the Jumbos lead.
  • The Terriers would score one run in the bottom of the 5th inning, but back to back runs in scored by the Jumbos in the top of the 6th and 7th inning would give Tufts a 7-10 lead with three outs to play.
  • The Terriers would make a strong comeback bid in the bottom of the 7th inning and cut the Jumbos lead to just one run with runners in scoring position.
  • But despite the Terriers strong comeback bid, the Jumbos would ultimately hang on to hand the Terriers a heartbreaking 9-10 loss in game two.
What's Next: 
  • The Terriers will return to action on Saturday, October 11th, traveling to White River Junction, Vermont to take on the University of Vermont Club Baseball team in a 7-inning doubleheader. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 12:00 PM, with game two following at 2:00 PM at Maxfield Sports Complex.
