Strong Second Half Propels Women’s Basketball to 62-53 Conference Victory Over Owls

Presque Isle, Maine – A strong second half on both ends of the floor would help the Terriers pick up their sixth conference win of the season, defeating the University of Maine Presque Isle Owls by a score of 62-53 in a North Atlantic Conference match up on Friday, January 24th. 

Records: 

Thomas: Overall (6-12), NAC (6-3) 

University of Maine Presque Isle: Overall (4-12), NAC (3-5) 

How it Happened: 

  • Sky Kubwalo and Mariah Roberts would get the Terriers offense going early in the first quarter, combining for six quick points in the opening minutes of the game. 

  • The Owls would answer quickly by cutting into the Terriers lead, but a Roberts three-pointer and a layup from Mollie Gray would give the Terriers five-point midway through the first quarter. 

  • Despite a solid offensive quarter from the Terriers would head into the second quarter trailing 15-17. 

  • The Owls would open the second quarter with a quick three-pointer, but Yaribel Pena and Gray would respond right away with layups on back-to-back possessions. 

  • Gray and Pena would take charge of the Terriers offense throughout the quarter, combining for ten of the twelve points in the quarter for the Terriers. 

  • But the Owls offense would continue to find responses and the Terriers would find themselves down 27-30 at the half in a tightly contested match up. 

  • The Terriers would start the second half strong, with Annabelle Morris, Kubwalo and Gray each contributing to an 6-0 run to help the Terriers reclaim the lead in the opening minutes of the third quarter.
  • The Owls would continue to try to regain momentum in midway through third quarter by keeping the game within reach.
  • But the Terriers would shut down the Owls on both ends of the floor in the final minutes of the third quarter, with four Terriers helping contribute to an 11-0 scoring run, to help put Thomas up 48-40 after three quarters of play.
  • Both the Terriers and the Owls would trade points early in a tightly contested fourth quarter.
  • Gray, Kubwalo and Roberts would keep the momentum going for the Terriers with points midway through the fourth quarter.
  • But just a few minutes later, the Owls offense would pressure the Terriers with a scoring run of their own, cutting the Terriers lead to just six points with less than two minutes to play.
  • But Roberts, Pena and Loring would help ice the game for Terriers, each scoring in the final minute of the play to seal a 62-53 conference victory over the Owls.

The Terriers will be back in action on Saturday, January 25th, as they will travel to Fort Kent, Maine to take on the University of Maine at Fort Kent Bengals in a non-conference match. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 PM.
