Thomas College Softball Rallied on the Final Day of Spring Games

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Clermont, FL – Thomas Softball splits their final day in Florida, almost getting the sweep by rallying in the final inning of game, but just coming up short. They first took on University of Northwestern St. Paul dropping a close 5-4 game, followed up by a 4-2 win against Simmons College.
 
Game 1 Northwestern St. Paul 5-4 Loss
  • The Eagles started off strong in the first inning, scoring 3 runs off three hits.
  • Northwestern St. Paul earned their fourth run after a batter who hit a triple scored off a passed ball.
  • It was a rather quiet game for Thomas up until the top of the sixth, with two outs Megan Oberholzer hit a shot right up the middle. The Eagles pitcher was able to get a glove on the ball keeping it in the infield. No other hits occurred in the sixth inning by the Terriers but momentum had shifted.
  • Emily Rock started up the seventh inning immediately hitting a single out to left field. Brooklyn Federico then advanced her to second after singling herself with a hit to left.
  • Abby Farone loaded caused a fielders choice in the infield causing E. Rock to be the second out of the inning on a force play at third.
  • That was followed by two back-to-back hits from Layla Pickering and Leah Knight to center field scoring Federico and Farone. Jennie Whitten put a ball in play to the Eagles third baseman and was able to reach off an error scoring Pickering.
  • Knight then came around and scored the tying run off a passed ball.  
  • However, the Eagles were able to get two hits, putting runners into scoring position with less than two outs before an RBI hit to center field finished the game, 5-4 UNW
  • Addy Boyce pitched up to the start of the 6th striking out three batters. Whitten then came in at the bottom of the 6th and pitched the final innings ending with one strikeout.
 
Game 2 Simmons College 4-2 Win
  • The Terriers started off the first inning promising getting bases loaded, thanks to a walk from leadoff hitter Pickering followed by two singles up the middle from both Whitten and Maddie Rock, but an infield hit to third ended the inning.
  • Simmons responded in the top of the second, scoring the first run of the game off two errors with two outs.
  • It wasn't until the bottom of the third when Thomas tied the game up at 1, as Oberholzer hit a double to center field scoring Pickering from second base.
  • The rest of the lineup joined in during the fourth, as E. Rocked (walked) scored thanks to a bunt from Abby Farone.
  • Cate Fairbrother-White, who pinch ran for Teresa McLinden, and Farone made it around to score after Knight beat out the fielder's choice throw to second base keeping the inning alive. The Sharks did get the third out to end the inning in the following play.
  • A small rally occurred for Simmons in the fifth as they scored their second run from a sac fly to right field.
  • The Terriers buckled down on defense only seeing seven batters in the following two innings to secure the 4-2 win.
  • Oberholzer pitched the full seven innings striking out five batters.

 The Terriers next game is an Elm City doubleheader against the Colby College Mules on Wednesday, March 20th at 3 and 5pm hosted at Colby College.
