Box Score 2 Clermont, FL – Thomas College Softball took on Johnson & Wales University and Wheaton College (Ill.) on Tuesday March 5
th falling 7-5 in Game 1 and 2-1 Game 2.
Game 1 Johnson & Wales University 7-5 Loss
- A quick start put the Terriers on top in the first inning after Maddie Rock singled out to center field, moving lead off batter Layla Pickering, who had walked earlier, to third. Megan Oberholzer then hit her first of the game to center field scoring Pickering.
- A quick run was then scored on the Wildcats side after a SAC bunt and shot to left field.
- This did not stop the Terrier momentum as the bottom of the line up was disciplined at the plate creating four walks, scoring their second run.
- Then game was then made 2-2 in the bottom of the third after an infield single scored a runner on third base.
- Short innings hit both of the teams, but Thomas earned the lead again in the top of the sixth after Oberholzer singled to right field before Jennie Whitten did exactly the same thing. Makayla Panich followed up by hitting a double to right center scoring pinch runner Rileigh Fortin. Abby Farone then reached first off an error allowing Panich to score, making it 4-2.
- The Wildcats did make a comeback in the bottom of the sixth after six hits bring the score to 7-4 going into the last inning.
- The Terriers were able to score one final run in the top of the seventh by M. Rock, but it was not enough to get the win as they fell 7-5.
- Oberholzer pitched the sixth innings played, striking out one batter. She also let the team going 4-4 at the plate.
Game 2 Wheaton College 2-1 Loss
- Again, the Terriers were the first on the board scoring a loan unearned run in the bottom of the second after Farone singled to right field scoring Emily Rock.
- The next two inning were quick for both teams, but the Terriers found themselves with a Wheaton runner in scoring position, but M. Rock was able to make the final play at shortstop to get them out of the inning.
- Pickering got her second hit of the game, but hits could not get strung together to get another run on the board in the fifth inning.
- Thomas found themselves with runners of second and third, but a bad bounce caused E. Rock who stole home on a passes ball to be called out ended the inning and momentum for the Terriers.
- Wheaton was able to string three hits together scoring a run at the top of the seventh inning making it 2-1
- Thomas was able to get bases loaded with two outs but was unable to get anything through.
- Addy Boyce pitched the full game, only giving up two walks.
What's Next:
The Terriers will be taking on Muskingum University at 9:15 am and Marietta College at 11:15 am on Thursday, March 7
th in their second to last day in Florida.
