Box Score 2 Waterville, ME – Thomas College Softball took on the Colby College Mules in a doubleheader match up that was originally scheduled for Wednesday next week. In a close game 1 the Terriers only fell with a score of 3-2, but then took a harder 10-4 loss wrapping up double feature.
Game 1 Loss 3-2:
- First Year pitcher Jennie Whitten was a star for the Terriers, keeping the contest close all six innings pitched, ending with three strikeouts, and only allowing three walks.
- Thomas immediately got to work in the first inning putting up a single run scored by Sophomore Leah Knight thanks to back-to-back singles from Megan Oberholzer and Maddie Rock.
- The Mules answered back with two runs thanks to three hits.
- The next two innings were quiet for both teams until the top of the fourth, where Thomas found themselves with M. Rock at third and First Year Emily Rock at first with one out. Junior Kayla Duhaime put the ball in play allowing M. Rock to tie up the game 2-2 after a close play at home.
- Thomas seemed to have the game's momentum as they got through Mules batters quickly when on defense.
- At the Top of the sixth two hits allowed the Terriers to have runners on first and second with one out, but they could not get the ball in play to bring one of those runners in.
- Entering the bottom of the sixth Colby added their third run after a single down the left field line scored a runner on second.
- During their final chance to tie or get ahead Thomas had Sophomore Abby Farone at third and Leah Knight at second with two outs. The Mules doubled down and was able to make the final out giving them the 3-2 victory in game 1.
Game 2 Loss10-4:
- Just as they did in game 1 Thomas did not waist time getting runs up on the board in the first inning. First Year Layla Pickering started it off with an infield single to the shortstop. Knight then walked advancing Pickering to second. A Wild pitch put both in scoring position and a walk from Oberholzer caused bases loaded.
- M. Rock put in ball in play and reached first off an error by the shortstop allowing both Pickering and Knight to score.
- The Mules quickly tied up the game at 2 when they got their chance to bat hitting a triple, double, and single.
- A three up three down inning by the Terriers allowed the Mules to carry the momentum earning four more runs in the bottom of the second inning on five hits, one being a double.
- The Terriers did get two runners on in the third after back-to-back walks but were unable to do anything with them on base.
- Three more Mule runs were added in the fourth inning off three hits.
- Thomas added a single run at the top of five after Knight got on base with an infield single, she then stole second. Whitten then made it to first by walking, then her and Knight advanced bases off a passed ball. Oberholzer was able to hit a single loading up the bases with no outs. E. Rock then hit an RBI scoring Knight, taking the score to 9-3 after the fifth inning.
- Thomas stayed scrappy getting more runners on in the sixth inning and scoring their fourth and final run. Abby Farone started it off with a single to right field. Pickering made her way to first after another error by the Mules shortstop. Knight loaded the bases with a walk before Whitten then hit an RBI to second base scoring Farone.
- The Mules then hit a homerun in the bottom of the sixth, earning their tenth run of the game.
- In the Terriers final at bat, Sophomore Katy McIntyre hit a double and made her way over to third, but she was unable to get in, final score 10-4 Colby.
- First Year Brooklyn Federico started in the mound for the Terriers before being relieved by Whitten at the top of the third inning. Whitten did end game two with two strikeouts.
What's Next:
The Terriers have a nice break and do not play again until Saturday, March 23
rd for a doubleheader at Saint Joseph's College of Maine, game times are at 12 & 2 pm.
