Thomas College Fall Short in Close Matches Against University of St. Joseph’s

West Hartford, CT – Men's Tennis played against the Blue Jays of St. Joseph's University on March 18th. The day concluded with a 9-0 score in favor of the Blue Jays.

The Records: 

Thomas College: Overall (1-4)

St. Joseph's University: Overall (5-3)

First Year Nicolas Arenas had a a tense match against USJ First Year Noah Rivera at the #1 singles spot. Arenas took an early lead, winning the first set 6-3. Rivera would answer back in the second set winning 6-3 himself. The match would conclude in a tense and drawn out third set where Rivera would inch out Arenas in a best of seven tie break 7-2 with the set score being 7-6.

Senior Jose Afonso would take the stage at #2 singles against USJ First Year Marko Karpuyuk. Afonso would start out strong with a 6-2 first set win over Karpuyuk. Karpuyuk would level the score after winning the second set 6-4. The match concluded with Karpuyuk winning 7-5 in a grueling third set.

 

Sophomore Gabe McPhail would be inched out 2-1 on sets against his opponent USJ First Year Ryan Boucher at #3 singles. After winning the first set on a tie break 7-2 and set score 7-6, McPhail would end up falling short against Boucher 6-4 and 6-2 in the second and third sets.

 

Arenas and Afonso played in the #1 doubles match against USJ opponents Noah Rivera and Ryan Boucher finishing with a loss of 8-5.

Men's Tennis takes on SUNY Delhi in a double header on March 18th at the Bubble in Delhi, NY starting at 11:00 am and 2:00 pm EST.
