Box Score 2 AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Thomas baseball split results on Tuesday, falling 15-14 against Anna Maria College and winning 10-3 against Penn State Altoona later in the day.
Game One: Thomas 14, Anna Maria 15
The Terriers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second, thanks to a Matt Seymour (Old Town, Maine) single. Seymour finished game one tied for a team-high three hits and three runs batted in. The Amcats were able to respond, and Thomas found themselves tied at 5-5 midway through seven innings. The Amcats broke out and scored eight runs in the bottom of the seventh to make the score 5-13. However, the Terriers scored two in the eighth inning thanks to a Devin Grindle (Surry, Maine) home run, and added seven more runs in the top of the ninth to find themselves leading 14-13 going into the bottom of the ninth. The Amcats scored a walk off double in the final inning to defeat the Terriers 15-14.
Ryan Kappelmann (Auburn, Maine) finished the game with three hits, while Tony Meza (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Kyle Gleason (Danville, N.H.) had two runs batted in each.Cameron Brooks (Middletown, Conn.) singled to center field to give Thomas a 14-13 lead in the top of the ninth.
Meza started on the mound for the Terriers, pitching five innings and allowing five runs on 10 hits. The Terriers used four pitchers total, including Daniel May (Honolulu, Hawaii), JJohnathon Martin (North Hills, Calif.), and Dylan Copeland (Salisbury, Mass.).
Game Two: Thomas 10, Penn State Altoona 3
The Terriers and the Nittany Lions split runs through the first six innings, with the score being 3-3 at the end of six. The Terriers scored one in the first, and two in the bottom of the sixth. The Nittany Lions split their runs between the first, fifth, and sixth. The Terriers six exploded for seven runs in the seventh inning, led by two home runs from Kappelmann and Tommy Smith (Cumming, Ga.). The Terriers never looked back, and scored one more in the eighth while shutting out the Nittany Lions in the final three innings to earn a 10-3 win.
Kappelmann and Grindle each had three hits and three runs batted in. Smith also had three hits. Smith, Kappelmann, and Grindle all homered in the seventh inning to help the Terriers take a 9-3 lead.
Zach Nickerson (Fairfield, Maine) got the start on the mound for the Terriers, going five innings and allowing two earned runs and five hits. Nickerson struck out two batters and only walked two. Andrew Pruell (Warren, Maine) came in for relief and pitched the remaining four innings, being rewarded with the win. Pruell only allowed one earned run and three hits.
UP NEXT: The Terriers will continue their spring trip tomorrow in a doubleheader against Worcester Polytechnic Institute, first pitch is scheduled at 9:30 a.m.
