3/30/2022 8:51:00 PM

AUBURN, Maine - Thomas baseball couldn't complete the comeback Wednesday afternoon against Central Maine Community College, falling by a score of 6-4.

The Terriers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second when Devin Grindle (Surry, Maine) scored. Thomas doubled their lead in the following inning when Ryan Kappelmann (Auburn, Maine) singled to right field scoring Tony Meza (Los Angeles, Calif.).

The Mustangs answered in the top of the fourth with two runs of their own. They added four more runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 6-2 lead. Jake Lacroix (Berwick, Maine) scored in the top of the eighth to get one run back off a ground ball hit by Jarrad Willette (Concord, N.H.).

In the top of the ninth the Terriers got two runners aboard to start the inning, off a pair of walks.  Grindle stepped to the plate with two outs and two on, representing the tie run. Alex Baker scored on a wild pitch during the at bat to cut the Mustang lead back down to two but the Mustangs were able to get Grindle to ground out to end the game.

LaCroix and Matt Seymour (Old Town, Maine) both had two hits for Thomas while Willette nabbed two RBIs. The Terriers used nine different pitchers in the game, with no one pitching more than an inning. The eight pitchers combined for six runs on four hits while striking out seven.

Tommy Smith (Cumming, Ga.), Garrison Paillet (Coconut Creek, Fla.), and Dylan Copeland (Salisbury, Mass.) combined to keep CMCC scoreless in the first three innings. Andrew Pruell (Warren, Maine), Zach Nickerson (Fairfield, Maine), and Meza also pitched scoreless innings in their respective outings for Thomas.

UP NEXT: The Terriers will travel to Brunswick to take on Bowdoin on Friday with first pitch scheduled at 3 p.m.
