NORTH ADAMS, Mass. --- The Thomas College men's tennis team locked up a North Atlantic Conference Tournament berth with a 9-0 shut out of MCLA at the Zavattaro Athletics Complex.
Thomas (7-7, 4-1 NAC) grabbed a 3-0 lead after doubles. Senior Tyler Small (Surry, Maine / Ellsworth) and sophomore Zachary Disch (Waterville, Maine / Waterville) won 8-4 over Aaron Goldsmith and Rob Wabshinak in the top doubles slot, while freshmen Nathan Philbrook (Rockland, Maine / Oceanside) and Ross Munn (Brunswick, Maine / Brunswick) won a tight match, 8-6, in the second slot. Seniors Caleb Mora (Surry, Maine / Ellsworth) and Joseph Greco (Greene, Maine / St. Dominic Academy) would take the third doubles match 8-0 to build a lead heading into singles play.
Small defeated Goldsmith 6-4, 6-1 to earn another point while Disch took care of Wabshinak 7-5, 6-3. Mora defeated Michael Rooney without dropping a game and Munn took care of Rich LaRocque in straight sets in the fourth slot.
Philbrook defeated Mason in the fifth singles match and Greco handled Jared Freeman in the sixth position.
The victory secures a berth in the NAC Tournament for Thomas, which closes its regular season on Saturday with a Senior Day matchup against Lyndon State at the Alfond Athletic Center. The Terriers defeated the Hornets, 8-1, in a nonconference matchup on April 3.
The Trailblazers (2-5, 2-2 NAC) currently hold down the final spot in the NAC Tournament and have NAC duals remaining at Green Mountain on Wednesday and at home against Castleton next Sunday.
