WATERVILLE, Maine --- The Thomas College men's tennis team opened North Atlantic Conference (NAC) play Saturday with an 8-1 loss to Colby-Sawyer College at Alfond Athletic Center.
Freshman Nathan Philbrook (Rockland, Maine / Oceanside) picked up a 7-5, 2-6, 1-0 (6) victory over Ryan Broderick at No. 5 singles for Thomas' lone point.
The Chargers (5-4, 1-0 NAC) kicked things off with a sweep in doubles. At first doubles, Gustav Jigrup and Andrew Peloquin edged senior Tyler Small (Surry, Maine / Ellsworth) and sophomore Zachary Disch (Waterville, Maine / Waterville), 8-6. Colby-Sawyer grabbed second and third doubles by identical 8-2 scores.
In singles, Jigrup topped Small, 6-1, 6-1, at the No. 1 spot, while Alex Wright topped Disch, 6-1, 6-2, at the No. 2 spot. Ryan Sawyer posted a 6-2, 6-4 win over senior Caleb Mora (Surry, Maine / Ellsworth) at No. 3, Dean Boodakian defeated freshman Ross Munn (Brunswick, Maine / Brunswick), 6-3, 6-0, and Peloquin topped senior Joseph Greco (Greene, Maine / St. Dominic Academy), 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6.
The Terriers (0-7, 0-1 NAC) are idle until April 2 when they travel to Johnson State for another NAC match.
