NEW LONDON, N.H. - The Thomas men's tennis team advanced to the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) East Division championship match after defeating No. 2 Castleton, but came up short, finishing as the runner's up after falling 5-0 to four-time champion and the top-seeded Colby-Sawyer Chargers.
SEMI-FINAL MATCH RECAP
Thomas avenged a regular season loss to Castleton with a 7-2 victory in the NAC East semifinals, and advanced to take on Colby-Sawyer, who defeated Green Mountain 9-0 in the other semifinal match.
The Terriers won two of three doubles matches to take a 2-1 lead. Eric Morin and Tyler Small cruised to an 8-2 victory over Christopher Belanger and Seth Marcil at the top doubles spot. Zachary Disch and Federico Trujillo defeated Kyle Martin and Andrew Overton at No. 2, 8-3.
Castleton won the No. 3 doubles match behind the duo of Trevor Hanna and Ryan Mulder, as the Spartans downed the Thomas team of Caleb Cough and Jonte Roussel, 8-4.
Thomas was able to secure the match by taking the top three single flights in straight sets. Morin won at No. 1 6-0, 6-1, while Small did not drop a game in a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 2. After a close first set win for Disch at 7-5, he wrapped up the match with a 6-3 second set victory.
The fourth through sixth matches were tightly contest with two of the matches going three sets.
Overton gave Castleton its second point of the afternoon with a hard fought 6-4, 7-6 (9-7) win over Cough at No. 4.
The Terriers would win at No. 5 and No. 6 but Caleb Mora and Joseph Greco were tested. Mora took the opening set 7-5, but Ryan Mulder battled back to tie the match at 1-1 with a 6-2 win in the second set. Playing a super tie break, Mora took the match 10-3.
Greco dropped his first set with Tyler Wilcox, 6-2, but responded nicely with a 6-3 win in the second. Greco secured the match with a 10-2 tie break win.
CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH RECAP
Thomas went down in the championship match 5-0 to Colby-Sawyer, who won their fourth straight North Atlantic Conference East Division championship.
The Chargers swept doubles play to take an important 3-0 lead in the match. The No. 3 doubles duo of Sergio Spassof and Dean Boodakian got the Chargers' first point with an 8-0 victory over Jonte Roussel and Caleb Cough. Seconds later, Justin Pinard and Andrew Peloquin won at No. 2, 8-0 over Zach Disch and Federico Trujillo.
The top doubles match was back and forth and tied at 4-4 before Colby-Sawyer's Cass McCann and Rico Bailey went on a run to secure an 8-5 victory over Tyler Small and Eric Morin.
Dean Boodakian gave Colby-Sawyer a 4-0 lead with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles over Greco. Boodakian won all four of his matches today and was named Tournament MVP. Sergio Spassof closed the match with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 4 over Cough.
Tyler Small was named to the All-Tournament team for the Terriers.
Thomas concludes their 2015 season with a 10-7 record and a second-place finish in the NAC East.
