WATERVILLE, ME - The Thomas men's tennis team dropped their home opener against the University of Southern Maine Huskies 8-1 this evening at the Alfond Athletic Center.
The Terriers (2-4) were unable to collect a win in doubles play to start off the match. Number one pair Eric Morin and Tyler Small went down against the Huskies (3-2) number one pair of Tyler Adams and Scott Gagne 8-1.
In number two doubles play, Kyle Curley and Thaddeaus St. John defeated the Terriers pair of Zachary Disch and Federico Trujillo 8-1 as well, while in third team doubles Sebastien Taylor and Joseph Gagliardi held off the pair of Jonte Roussel and Caleb Cough 8-6 as the Huskies jumped out to a 3-0 match lead heading into singles play.
Morin lost a tough number one singles match, going down 6-2, 6-2 against Tyler Adams of the USM. Number two singles featured what turned out to be the match of day, as Tyler Small could not outlast Scott Gagne, falling 7-5, 3-6, 10-7.
Disch was defeated 6-1, 6-1 in third singles play by Curley and Caleb Mora dropped his number four singles match 6-4, 6-0 against St. John.
Cough took Taylor to a 10-point tiebreaker in fifth singles, but was unable to secure the win, falling 6-2, 4-6, 10-5. Roussel came away with the lone match victory for the Terriers, defeating Gagliardi 6-3, 6-3 in sixth singles play.
Thomas will return to the courts on Saturday, March 28 at 1:00 PM as they take on the Johnson State Badgers in their North Atlantic Conference opener.
