Box Score 2 WATERVILLE, ME – Thomas College (7-22) was unable to pick up a victory, falling to Bowdoin College (16-11-1) in a non-conference baseball doubleheader on Monday afternoon. The Polar Bears took the first contest 15-0, then held on for a 4-2 win in the nightcap.
GAME ONE
Bowdoin combined for 15 hits, including a three run homerun by Chad Martin to route the hosts 15-0 in the opening game.
A passed ball in the first inning scored Aaron Rosen to give the away side an early advantage, then the Polar Bears erupted for six runs in the second and five in the third to jump out to a comfortable 12-0 lead.
Bowdoin added a run in the fifth, and two in the sixth to take the game 15-0.
Thomas, despite the loss had seven hits in the losing effort, including a 2-2 day at the plate for Tim Locke.
Dylan McNally suffered the loss on the mound, lasting just 2.2 innings, while striking out four. Tyler Keller, Justin Roy, and Rob Casarez each recorded an appearance on the hill in mop-up duty.
Michael Staes earned the win, going five innings with five strikeouts and no earned runs.
GAME TWO
Thomas fell in the second game 4-2, despite out hitting the Polar Bears 9-7 in the losing effort.
Bowdoin got on the board in the first inning with two runs, including an RBI single by Martin to plate in Rosen, and a sacrifice fly by Sam Canales to left field that scored Peter Cimini.
Nik Beeson hit a sacrifice fly to center field in the bottom of the third that drove in Anree Benitez for the Terriers first run of the afternoon and cut the deficit in half. The Polar Bears extended their advantage in the fourth however as Kyle LeBlanc tripled that scored Chris Cameron and Rosen drove home LeBlanc later in the inning.
The Terriers added another in the fifth with a Locke single that brought home Joe Quinlan, but the hosts were unable to squander anymore runs, falling 4-2.
Taylor Bacon took the loss, tossing 3.2 innings, giving up two earned runs on five hits, with two strikeouts. Rett Adams pitched 3.1 innings of shutout relief, giving up just two hits with one strikeout.
Sam Herzig earned the victory for the Polar Bears, going three innings, while Stephen Girolamo and Jon Fraser each pitched two innings out of the bullpen in the win.
Thomas will be back out on Ryan Field tomorrow as they host Husson for a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) twinbill. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 PM. The Eagles swept the first doubleheader of the season against the Red and Black 6-0 and 10-0 earlier in the month in Bangor.
