Thomas Defeats RIT, Falls to Buffalo State

CLERMONT, FL – Thomas College softball was able to split their two games on day two of the Florida spring trip, defeating Rochester Institute of Technology, 5-4, and falling to Buffalo State 15-1 on Wednesday. 

 

GAME ONE

RIT took an early two run lead in the second inning as a triple by Alexa Farner drove in two runs. The Terriers responded in the bottom half of the inning when Brianne Gonzalez scored on a wild pitch. The Tigers added another and went up 3-1.

Thomas had a big fourth inning, scoring three runs and went ahead 4-3. Phyllicia Jordan drove in two runs on a double to right center, scoring Lindsy Hoopingarner and Taylor Bergeron.

In the sixth inning RIT evened the score at four apiece, but the Terriers scored the walkoff winning run in the bottom of the seventh on a sacrifice bunt that scored Hoopingarner.

Kelsey Crowe got the win in the circle, tossing all seven innings, yielding three earned runs, while striking out four.


GAME TWO

Buffalo State tacked on eight runs in the first inning to jump out to a lead early. They added a run in the second, two in the third, and four in the fourth in route to 15 runs in the contest.

The Red and Black scored their lone run of the game in the top of the fifth on a single by Ashlee Quirrion that brought in Jordan.

Faith Robinson suffered the loss on the bump, tossing two innings. Nicole Ryder and Chelsea Hale both tossed an inning of relief in the losing effort.

The Terriers are back in action tomorrow as they take on Kalamazoo and Calvin.
