CLERMONT, FL – Thomas College softball kicked of the 2014 season on Tuesday in the first day of their Florida trip, splitting the two games. In the opener, the Terriers defeated Hamline 4-3, then fell to Oberlin 11-3 in the nightcap.

GAME ONE

Thomas kicked off the contest in the first inning, scoring three of their four runs. The Red and Black added to their lead with another run in the top of the third.

Hamline cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth, tacking on two runs and cutting the Thomas lead to 4-2. The Pipers brought the game to one run, adding another run in the fifth inning. Despite the late game rally by Hamline, Thomas was able to hang on for the victory in their season opener.

Kelsey Crowe recorded the win in the circle, tossing five innings while giving up one earned run with one strikeout.

Freshman Mary Ortiz led the Terrier offense going 2-4 with one RBI.

GAME TWO

Oberlin jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a double by Katie Pieplow, who came around to score on a costly defensive error. Alyssa Eugley led the bottom half of the first off however with a leadoff triple, then came in to score on a fielder's choice by Courtney Veilleux.

The Yeowoman tacked on an addition two runs in the second, then added three more in the fourth to 7-1 lead.

Thomas' Faith Robinson was able to reach base on a fielding error in the bottom of the fourth, which scored two runs to cut the deficit to 7-4.

A big four run fifth inning by the opposition would put a damper to the comeback attempt, as the Terriers were unable to tack on another run, falling 11-3 in their second game of the day.

Robinson suffered the loss, tossing 3.2 innings, while giving up 12 hits and four earned runs. Taylor Jordan pitched 1.1 innings of relief, yielding four hits and two earned runs, while striking out one.
