Men’s Basketball Postseason Chances Shattered by MMA in 80-74 loss

Castine, Maine – Men's Basketball have been eliminated from North Atlantic Conference playoff contention after dropping their final regular season game by a score of 80-74 to the Maine Maritime Academy Mariners on Monday, February 12th. 

Records: 

Thomas: Overall (9-16), Conference (6-8) 

MMA: Overall (11-14), Conference (6-8) 

How it Happened: 

  • The Mariners would start the game with a 5-1 lead, but 10 combined points from Metin Yavuz and Cooper Wirkala would give the Terriers a 11-6 lead in the first four minutes of the game 

  • The Terriers would continue to apply the pressure early on, with James Phelan scoring a jumper in the paint to give the Terriers a 19-10 lead 

  • But MMA would answer the Terriers, tying the game at 27-27 midway through the first half 

  • Wirkala and Kory Winch would knock down a pair of three-pointers, but the Mariners continued to keep it close late in the half 

  • Yavuz would hit a 3-pointer and a layup in the remaining 2 minutes to give the Terriers a 41-40 lead at the half 

  • Phelan would open the second half with a 3-pointer, but the Mariners would respond quickly with a 10-0 run of their own, giving MMA a 50-44 lead 

  • The Terriers and Mariners would go back and forth for a few minutes, but layups from Phelan and Jackson Ruelke would give the Terriers a 4-point lead midway through the second half 

  • Yavuz would score a layup to keep the Terriers in the lead late, but the Mariners would shift the momentum, taking a 74-67 lead  

  • Phelan and Wirkala would both hit three-pointers with under 3 minutes to play but it would not be enough as the Mariners would hold on to hand the Terriers an 80-74 loss

  • Cooper Wirkala – 25 PTS, 5 REB, 8-11 3PT 

  • Metin Yavuz – 17 PTS, 8 REB 

  • James Phelan – 12 PTS, 7 AST, 5 REB 

  • The Terriers shot 40% from the field, 52% from 3-point range, and 62% from the free throw line
