Men's Ice Hockey Goes 2-0 in Weekend Road Trip

Bolton, CT - Men's Ice Hockey went 2-0 in two thrilling wins on the road this weekend. Game one on Saturday Octboer 26th, was against the University of Connecticut, and game two on Sunday, October 27th, was against Springfield College.

How it Happened:

Game One - VS University of Connecticut

  • Despite coming out quick in the first period the Terriers found themselves down 2 – 0.
  • With 8:20 left in the period Caleb Micklon scored his first career goal cutting the deficit to 2-1.
  • Hunter Coughlin assisted the goal, and behind some solid goaltending from Toby Hopson the score remained 2-1.
  • Despite carrying the play early in the second it was the Huskies that scored consecutive goals and the Terriers found themselves down 4-1.
  • As they would all night they battled back, and it was veteran Kegan Rodrigue that answered the UCONN fourth goal just 12 seconds later when he buried a rebound to cut the lead to 4-2. Tyler Kenney and Lucas Martin assisted on the goal.
  • With 2:44 left in the second period Quinn Hawley flew into the zone with the puck, as he cycled behind the net he dropped a backhand pass to DJ Cagnina who rifled it in the back of the net cutting the deficit to 4-3 as the teams headed to the dressing room. Jack Perron also assisted on the goal.
  • Thomas came out flying in the third period and six minutes in it was Hawley that blasted the equalizer over the top shoulder of the Huskies goaltender. Tyler Gay assisted.
  • Six minutes later Micklon took over and put the Terriers in front 5-4. Perron and Hawley had the assists and it was looking like the visitors were going to get a win in regulation.
  • With 1:30 left in the third period and the goalie pulled, UCONN was able to tie the game and the teams were headed to overtime.
  • In overtime the Terriers controlled the opening faceoff. After some back and forth Coughlin moved the puck to Micklon who raced in on the left side of the ice.
  • Micklon used his speed to get behind the UCONN defenders, and with a perfectly placed shot he abruptly ended the game.
  • The Hat-Trick earned him player of the game honors, and the Terriers flooded the ice to greet him after the 5-4 win.
  • Hopson earned the win in what was his first career start. After battling some nerves early on Hopson settled in, making 24 saves.

Game Two - VS Springfield College

  • 18 Hours after getting their first victory the puck was dropped at Smead Arena, as the Terriers took on the Springfield Pride.
  • Thomas got off the bus flying, and 1:51 into the game Perron netted his first goal of the season.
  • Less than two minutes later it was Cagnina that added to the lead on a feed from Bird.
  • Despite a hard push from Springfield the period ended with a 2-0 lead for the Terriers.
  • The second period was continued back and forth but with a minor tripping penalty the Pride beat netminder Hopson (28 saves).
  • Again the two teams battled for the remainder of the period, but neither could score and headed to the dressing rooms with the Terriers up 2-1.
  • The third period featured several solid chances for the Terriers, but it was Springfield that would breakthrough with just over eight minutes remaining, making it 2-2.
  • Showing plenty of resiliency the Terriers bore down and while on a power play
  • Hawley buried the eventual game winner on a feed from Bird to win 3-2.
  • Hopson made several key saves in both the second and third periods, and essentially shut down Springfield in numerous critical situations.
  • In only his second career start Hopson got the win and was the decisive choice for player of the game.
  • Despite facing tremendous adversity, significant line and position changes, the Terriers were able to earn two difficult road wins and quickly find themselves back at .500 on the early season.

What's Next:
  • Men's Ice Hockey will be back in action as they take on Bates College at the Thomas College Ice Vault on Friday, November 1st, 2024. Puck drop is set for 8:00 PM.
