ESTERO, Florida – Thomas Men's College Ice Hockey (0-4-1) traveled to Florida this past weekend to play Florida Gulf Coast University twice at the Hertz Arena.
It was a great experience for the Terrier student athletes but the Eagles proved to be tough competition, sweeping the weekend. FGCU won the first game on Friday, shutting out Thomas 6-0.
The Eagles jumped to an early lead in the first period. The Terriers had one power play opportunity but were able to capitalize. The Eagles extended their lead with two additional goals and headed into the first intermission with a comfortable lead over the Terriers, 3-0.
Goaltender
Miloslav Fuksa (Czech Republic) did not allow a single goal in the second period, but the Terriers were unable to generate any scoring offence. The Eagles continued to control the game and entered the second intermission with a 3-0 lead.
The Terriers started the third period strong, but their momentum was derailed by a series of penalties. The Eagles scored two goals early in the third period, and the Terriers were unable to convert three power play opportunities into points. Florida Gulf Coast scored their final goal of the game late in the third period and the Eagles won, 6-0
In the second game the Terriers were able to get on the board but again the offensive prowess of FGCU proved to be too much, as the Eagles scored the 9-1 victory.
Thomas took the lead in the first period when
Cameron Tower (Orono, Maine) deflected a centering pass from
Cameron Bigelow (West Gardiner, Maine). Florida Gulf Coast responded with a series of three goals and headed into the first intermission with a comfortable two goal lead over the Terriers, 3-1.
The Eagles dominated the second period plagued by penalty minutes and scored four additional goals. Thomas entered the second intermission behind, 7-1.
The Terriers had a favorable power play opportunity in the third period but could not finish the puck. Florida Gulf Coast added two more goals in the third period and beat the Terriers, 9-1
Up next the Terriers will travel to the Proctor Arena in Proctor, New Hampshire to play Colby-Sawyer College on Saturday, November 20th.
