Box Score WATERVILLE, ME – Thomas College men's basketball team fell to Wheelock, 72-71, in day two of the Charlie Ryan Classic on Saturday at the Larry Mahaney Gymnasium.
The Terriers were given their first loss of the season, falling to 2-1 while the Wildcats move to 2-1.
In the first three minutes of the game, the teams traded points but the Wildcats eventually went on a run to go ahead 17-10 in the 15:03 mark. The Terriers responded when freshman guard Zach Mackinnon (Kennebunk, Maine / Kennebunk) hit a three-pointer to put the Terriers ahead 22-20 with 9:06 remaining in the half. Both teams went into the locker room tied up 39-39 at halftime after many lead changes throughout the half.
In the second half, the Wildcats went on a run to go ahead 48-39 in the first 3:30 minutes of the half, taking the largest lead of the game. Wheelock continued their run when they went ahead by 12 points at the 14:21 mark of the half. The Terriers responded a minute later when Willie Grant (Phildelphia, Pa. / Paul Robeson) added a three pointer and a layup while Carlos Gonzalez (Kennebunk, Maine / Lewiston) added two to bring the score within five.
Freshman guard Dan Amabile's (Waterboro, Maine / Massabesic) three pointer brought the Terriers to a lead, 57-56, just into the nine-minute mark. Derek Fournier quickly added two points to give Wheelock the lead back.
The Terriers stretched their lead to 67-61 with 2:45 left. Fournier hit a three with 59 seconds left to bring the game within one. Simon quickly came back with a layup to bring the Terriers to a three-point lead with 49 seconds left.
After a foul on the play, Nicholas Fenton made the following free throws to bring the Wildcats within one.
In the remaining 5.5 seconds, a jump shot by Fournier gave Wheelock the lead and ended the scoring 72-71 in favor of the Wildcats.
Simon led the Terriers with 20 points while Gonzalez added a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Grant chipped in with 12 points and 6 rebounds.
Leading the Wildcats offense was Anthony Williams with 24 points and 8 rebounds and Nicholas Fenton with 15 points and 10 boards.
Thomas will return to the court on Tuesday, November 22 as they host Colby College at 7:30 p.m. in Larry Mahaney Gymnasium.
