Terriers Knocked Off By Spartans

WATERVILLE, ME – The Thomas men's basketball saw their three-game winning streak come to an end as they fell to Castleton 91-81 on Saturday afternoon. Thomas made 15 threes in the loss.

The first half was very up tempo as both teams got up and down the floor. The Terriers shot 45.7 percent from the floor, making 16 of 35 shots from the field, including 8 of 17 from downtown.

The Spartans hit on 45.9 percent of their shots, going 17 of 37, but just 2 of 8 from three-point range. Castleton did control the glass in the half, owning a 24-1 advantage.

Senior Eric Westbrooks led all scorers with 14 points at the break, while Chad Copeland led the Spartans with 12. Westbrooks also added in a team-high six rebounds, and Carnelius Green had nine points and nine boards for Castleton as they led 45-44 going into halftime.

Thomas shared the ball well in the half, assisting on 12 of their 18 made shots.

In the second half, the Terriers led by as much as eight before the Spartans made their run. With Thomas up 72-64 and just over nine minutes remaining, Castleton went on an 18-4 run over the next seven minutes to take an 82-76 lead.

The Spartans closed the door down the stretch, knocking down seven of their final nine foul shots and holding Thomas to just three points over the remaining two minutes. Castleton outscored Thomas 46-37 in the second half.

The Terriers had four players in double-figure scoring, as Levi Barnes led with 18, Adam Carlsen had 17 points with five three-pointers, Westbrooks finished with 16 and Justin Murray added 10 in defeat.

The Spartans were led by Copeland with a game-high 28 points along with eight rebounds. Pavin Parrish went for 23 points, making 13 of 14 from the free throw line, and eight assists. Green recorded a double-double with 10 points and 15 boards.

Thomas knocked down 15 threes on the afternoon, while Castleton converted 22 of 31 at the foul line. The Spartans also dominated the glass, owning a decisive 46-28 advantage.

The Terriers will next take the court on Friday, January 30, as the travel to take on the Colby-Sawyer Chargers at 5:30 PM.
