Box Score
WATERVILLE, ME- Thomas (11-9, 7-7 NAC) was able to come from behind to defeat Bates (9-14, 3-5 NESCAC) in a non-conference men's basketball contest Tuesday night at Larry Mahaney Gymnasium. Franklin Salvador (Somerville, Mass.) hit his 1,000 career point from top right side of the arc at the 8:55 mark to cut the Terrier deficit to one and spark the team, becoming the 26th member in the process, etching his name in the Thomas men's basketball history books.
Thomas started off the scoring with a Jarrad DeVaughn (Brockton, Mass.) layup, but that would be the only lead of the opening half for the home side. Bates would take command, leading by as many as 12 at the 5:24 mark on a three-pointer by Luke Matarazzo (Shelton, Conn.). DeVaughn's three at the buzzer would cut the deficit to five for the Terriers at the half, 38-33.
In the first half Thomas was led by DeVaughn with a game leading 15 points, going 5-8 from the floor and 4-5 from downtown. Ed Bogdanovich (Portland, Maine) had a team-leading nine points in the opening stanza for the visiting side.
Bates jumped out to a nine point lead to start the second half, but Thomas was able to fight back to tie the game with 11:20 left by a layup from Marquis Pollard (Philadelphia, Pa.). The lead continued to switch hands four times throughout the remaining 10:40.
The Bobcats took a five point lead with 2:24 remaining, but Thomas was able to climb their way back and took the lead for good after a flagrant foul by Bogdanovich that sent Levi Barnes (Skowhegan, Maine) to line where he hit both free throws. The Terriers were able to ice the game away by hitting eight of eight free throws down the stretch.
The Terriers had all five starters in double figures led by Devaughn with 19 points and 9 rebounds. Bogdanovich led the Bobcats with 19 points, while Mike Boornazian (Portland, Conn.) chipped in a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Thomas will return to action in their last home stand of the season this weekend, hosting conference opponent Johnson State on Friday, Feb. 8 at 5:30pm. Earlier in the year, the Terriers fell to the Badgers in Vermont 87-84. Salvador had a game-high 26 points in the loss.
