Terriers Sink Mariners, 89-74

WATERVILLE, ME- The Thomas men's basketball team (6-7, 3-7 NAC) ended a five-game losing streak Thursday evening as they knocked off Maine Maritime Academy (4-10, 3-6 NAC) 89-74, in a North Atlantic Conference matchup.

In a tight battle early on, the lead switched back and forth as the Terriers took the lead for the sixth time in the opening half at the 9:41 mark off a jumper by Garen Manzo (Millinocket, Maine) and never turned back, finishing the half with a 22-point lead with a buzzer beater three pointer by Jordan Hoyt (Wilton, Maine).

Thomas went 17-41 (43.3%) from the floor in the first half, shooting 38.9% (7-18) from beyond the arc. Freshman Adam Carlsen (Rockport, Maine) got his third start of the season and didn't disappoint, chipping in with 10 points to start off the game. Jarrad DeVaughn (Brockton, Mass.) had nine points along with a game leading seven rebounds.

Maine Maritime shot 43.3% in the first half, with nine points coming from Logan Poirier (Winterport, Maine) and Ben Russell (Farmington, Maine).

Thomas kept the momentum going into the second half, extending their lead to 30 points after a jumper by Levi Barnes (Skowhegan, Maine). Barnes finished the game with a team-high 19 points, shooting six of eight from the field as well as a perfect six for six from the charity stripe.

DeVaughn collected his first double-double of the season while leading the Terriers with 10 rebounds to go along with his 12 points.

Russell led the Mariners with a game-high 22 points, shooting 75% (9-12) including four threes. Poirier led the Mariners with 11 rebounds.

Overall, Thomas shot 37.8% (31-82) from the floor, 83.3% (15-18) from the line, and made 12 threes throughout the game. Maine Maritime Academy shot 45.6% (31-68) from the field, including 53.3% (8-15) from beyond the arc. Thomas won the turnover battle, 11-20.

Thomas will return to action on Saturday as they travel to Bangor to take on Husson at 1pm. The Eagles defeated the Terriers earlier this month at Thomas, 87-67. Thomas is looking to end a 0-4 drought against Husson, with its last victory during the 2010-11 campaign.
