Field Hockey Drops Homecoming Matchup to VTSU Castleton

Waterville, ME - The Thomas College field hockey team fell to Vermont State University Castleton, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon at Bernatchez Field during Homecoming weekend. The Terriers battled back late in the fourth quarter, but the Spartans held on for the victory. 

 

How It Happened: 

  • Thomas controlled the early action, earning four penalty corners in the opening 10 minutes and creating several opportunities in the circle. 

  • Abby Stevens nearly opened the scoring off a penalty corner at 10:26, but her shot was stopped by a defensive save. 

  • Mackenzie Toner kept the Spartans off the board in the opening half, making four saves through the first 30 minutes as the teams entered halftime scoreless. 

  • Thomas continued to pressure in the third quarter, earning five penalty corners and putting several shots toward the Castleton cage. 

  • Castleton broke through at 37:25 when Ava Laross found the back of the cage to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead. 

  • Castleton extended its advantage at 42:01 when Mackenna Roberson scored off an assist from Peyton Richardson, making it 2-0 heading into the fourth quarter. 

  • Thomas responded early in the fourth when Stevens finished off an opportunity at 48:48, with Samantha Thebarge providing the assist to cut the deficit to 1-2. 

  • The Terriers continued to apply pressure, earning five penalty corners during the fourth quarter. Thebarge and Tatiana Roque each put shots on goal during the late push. 

  • Castleton added another goal at 57:57 when Allison Friel scored off an assist from Brooke Noble. 

  • Thomas continued to battle through the final minutes, but Castleton held on for the 1-3 victory. 

     

Inside the Stats: 

  • Thomas finished with 17 shots and 15 penalty corners 


 

What's Next: 

  • The Terriers will remain at home on Wednesday, September 30, when they host the University of Maine at Farmington at Bernatchez Field. The 6:00 PM matchup will mark the conference opener for Thomas.
