Baseball Splits Day One of UMPI Series

Waterville, ME - Baseball split day one of a two-day series against the University of Maine Presque Isle at Colby College on Sunday, March 29th, 2026. The final scores were 7-1 and 5-9.

How it Happened:

Game One: 7-1 Win (9 Innings)

  • Thomas struck first in the second inning, taking advantage of a passed ball that allowed Gavin Clark to score.
  • Moments later Mitch Regan added to the lead with an RBI single up the middle, advancing the runners and scoring Gus Hollen, making it 2–0.
  • The Owls responded in the third inning to cut the deficit to 2–1, but that would be the Owls' only run of the game.
  • The Terriers answered right back in the fourth inning, as Hayden Dippner delivered a clutch two-RBI single to extend the lead to 4–1, scoring Regan and Grady Hotham.
  • Dippner continued his strong performance in the sixth inning, adding a sacrifice fly that advanced the runners and scoring Hotham to bring home another run.
  • Thomas pulled away for good in the seventh inning, capitalizing on defensive miscues.
  • A fielding error allowed DJ Cagnina to score, then a passed ball later in the inning brought home the final run in Ajay Rychcik.
  • This sealed the 7–1 victory in the opening game of the four game series.
  • Kyle Delano put in one of the best pitching performances the team will likely see all season, pitching nine complete innings and only allowing three hits with zero earned runs.

Game Two: 9-5 Loss (7 Innings)

  • The Owls jumped out to an early lead to put themselves up 2-0 in the first inning.
  • Thomas chipped away and quickly responded. Mitch Regan drove in a run with a double, advancing runners and scoring Hotham in the second.
  • Zeke Rand followed with an RBI single in the third, scoring Nick Griffel to even the score at 2–2.
  • The Terriers took control in the fourth inning, manufacturing three runs to grab a 5–2 lead.
  • Nick Griffel brought in Patrick Temby on a fielder's choice.
  • Rychcik added an RBI single scoring Griffel before Cagnina scored on a passed ball making it 5-2.
  • However, the momentum shifted in the fifth inning, with the Owls hit for six runs to take an 8–5 lead.
  • The inning proved to be the turning point, as Thomas was unable to recover.
  • The Owls added an insurance run in the seventh inning, extending the lead to 9–5 and securing the game two victory.
