Big First Quarter Propels Field Hockey to 2-1 Win Against Monks

Waterville, ME – A big first quarter from the Terriers saw them defeat the Saint Joseph's College of Maine Monks at home on Wednesday, September 3rd, 2025. The final score was 2-1.

How it Happened:
  • The Terriers started off strong, earning several penalty corners that forced saves from the Monks goalkeeper.
  • With two minutes remaining in the first quarter Paige Gilbert drove in a ball on the right-hand side of the field that found Leah Knight, and Knight buried the ball in the cage to give the Terriers a 1-0 lead.
  • With time expiring after a penalty corner, Maci Freeman delivered another ball into the area that found Samantha Thebarge, who sent a rocket into the bottom right corner to make it 2-0 headed into the second.
  • Despite the strong first quarter from the Terriers, the Monks battled right back with several key chances of their own – forcing Terrier goalkeeper Eliya Drummond to make several saves.
  • The Terriers went into halftime up 2-0 after a hard-fought first half.
  • Four minutes into the second half the Monks scored from a deflected cross, cutting the Terrier lead to just one goal.
  • Terrier goalkeeper Mackenzie Toner was forced to make a few good kick saves in the third quarter to ensure the Terriers kept their lead.
  • The Terriers ended the third quarter well, generating three shots from penalty corners that were either blocked or went just wide.
  • Thebarge forced another good save from the Monks goalkeeper six minutes into the fourth, nearly scoring her second of the game.
  • The Monks turned up the pressure late in the game, generating several penalty corners and shots that were either blocked or saved by Toner.
  • With two minutes remaining the Monks goalkeeper made another huge save after Tatiana Roque was able to weave through three defenders, but the Terriers would eventually hang on to win 2-1.
