NECBA Club Baseball Splits Doubleheader With UMFK

Waterville, ME - NECBA Club Baseball hosted the University of Maine at Fort Kent in a seven inning doubleheader on Sunday, September 21st. The Terriers would fall to the Bengals 8-10 in a close first game, but struck back in a condensed game two by a score of 19-7. 

Game One: Thomas NECBA Club 8 - UMFK 10

How it Happened:
  • Wyatt Smith would earn the start on the mound for the Terriers in game one.
  • The Bengals would claim the momentum early on, jumping out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.
  • The Bengals would continue to increase their lead in the 2nd inning, scoring four runs to make it a 5-0 game.
  • But the Terriers bats would come alive shortly after, scoring two runs in the bottom of the 2nd, and four runs in the bottom of the 3rd to put the Terriers ahead 6-5.
  • The Bengals would respond with three runs in the top of the 4th inning to reclaim the lead.
  • The Terriers would bring in Xavier Estes midway through the top of the 5th inning to relieve Smith, with Smith finishing the contest with six strikeouts.
  • But runs scored by UMFK in the top of the 5th, and 6th inning would extend the Bengals lead to four runs.
  • The Terriers would try and rally late in the game, scoring runs in the bottom of the 6th and 7th inning.
  • But the Bengals would ultimately hold on to hand the Terriers a 8-10 loss in game one.
  • Robby Neese and Noah Greenman would lead the Terriers offense in game one, going for a combined 4-6 with one RBI.

Game Two: Thomas NECBA Club 19 - UMFK 7 (4 innings)

How it Happened: 
  • Vincent Pavonetti would get the start on the mound for the Terriers in game two against the Bengals, finishing the contest allowing only three hits and earning one strikeout.
  • The Bengals would jump out to an 4-0 early lead in the top of the first inning.
  • But the Terriers would respond with a strong offensive showing in the bottom of the 1st inning, scoring 10 runs to give the Terriers a 6-run lead.
  • The Bengals would cut into the Terriers lead in the top of the 2nd inning, scoring two runs to make it a 10-6 game.
  • But the Terriers would continue to maintain the momentum, scoring three runs in the bottom of the 2nd, and 6 runs in the bottom of the 3rd to give the Terriers a sizable 19-6 lead.
  • The Bengals would score one run in the top of the fourth inning. 
  • However, play would be halted in the bottom of the fourth inning, with the Terriers up 19–7, as the setting sun made it too dark to continue the contest.
  • Derek Martin would lead the Terriers offense with a strong performance in game two, going 4-4, with 2 RBI's and 2 runs scored.

What's Next: 
  • NECBA Club Baseball will return to action on Wednesday, September 24th, traveling to Bridgton, Maine, to take on the Bridgton Academy Wolverines in a nine inning contest. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
