Softball Falls Short in Away Doubleheaders vs Gordon College

Wenham, MA – The Thomas College softball team traveled to Gordon College on Friday, April 25th, for a thrilling doubleheader. The first game stretched into extra innings, while the second followed a standard seven-inning format. Despite their best efforts, the Terriers suffered narrow one-run losses in both games. Senior Teresa McLinden, hailing from New York, was celebrated along with Gordon's seniors, as Thomas' Senior Day had been postponed and is likely to be rescheduled for a weekday.

Thomas College Record: 9-18 (Overall), 2-2 (NAC)
Gordon College Record: 10-24 (Overall), 2-13 (CNE)

Game 1: Thomas 4, Gordon 5 (9 Innings)

How It Happened:
  • The Terriers started the game quietly, going three up, three down in the first inning. Gordon immediately capitalized, putting a run on the board with a solo home run to take an early lead.
  • In the third inning, Gordon added another run after a double drove in a baserunner who had singled earlier in the inning, extending their lead to 2-0.
  • The momentum shifted in the fifth inning when Thomas began to capitalize on Gordon's defensive miscues. Kayla Duhaime laid down a bunt to get on base, and Brooklyn Federico reached first due to an error. Another error allowed Duhaime to score the first run for Thomas. Moments later, Corinne Vasvary hit a ground ball that, combined with yet another Gordon error, allowed Federico to score, tying the game 2-2.
  • Gordon responded immediately in the bottom of the fifth, reclaiming the lead with a sacrifice fly to right field, making it 3-2.
  • The seventh inning brought more excitement. Duhaime led off with a triple down the left-field line and scored on a passed ball, tying the game once again at 3-3. Gordon couldn't respond in the bottom of the inning, sending the game into extra innings.
  • The bottom of the eighth saw a critical defensive play by McLinden, who fielded a ball with a runner on third and made the play at home to prevent the game-winning run.
  • In the ninth, McLinden came through offensively, delivering a sacrifice fly that scored Leah Knight, who was pinch-running for Mackenzie Toner, giving Thomas a 4-3 lead.
  • However, Gordon capitalized on small-ball tactics in the bottom of the ninth. Two bunts loaded the bases, and a walk-off double secured the 5-4 victory for the Fighting Scots.
Inside the Stats:
  • Megan Oberholzer pitched five innings, allowing two earned runs with two strikeouts and one walk.
  • Addy Boyce relieved Oberholzer in the sixth, giving up only one earned run.
  • Duhaime had an exceptional game, going 2-for-3 at the plate and contributing significantly on the base paths.

Game 2: Thomas 3, Gordon 4

How It Happened:
  • The second game started with a defensive battle, as both teams were held scoreless in the early innings. Layla Pickering recorded the Terriers' first hit in the second inning with a well-placed single to left-center.
  • In the third inning, First-Year Carlie Jarvais reached base on an infield single but was stranded as the inning ended.
  • Gordon broke the deadlock in the fourth inning with a four-run rally. After two singles put runners on base, a three-run home run cleared the bases and gave the Fighting Scots a commanding 4-0 lead.
  • Thomas began their comeback in the bottom of the fourth. Makayla Panich hit a double to left field and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Pickering then delivered an RBI ground out to put Thomas on the board, making it 4-1.
  • The Terriers kept the pressure on in the fifth inning. Maddy Morris singled up the middle, followed by a double from Jarvais that moved Morris to third. Maeve Hickok came through with an RBI single, scoring Morris, and a subsequent wild pitch brought Jarvais home, cutting Gordon's lead to 4-3.
  • Despite getting a hit from Knight in the sixth inning, Thomas couldn't generate more runs, and Gordon held on for the 4-3 win.
Inside the Stats:
  • Brooklyn Federico pitched a complete game for the Terriers, recording two strikeouts and four walks.
  • Jarvais led the way at the plate, going 2-for-4.
  • Hickok and Pickering each contributed an RBI, both going 1-for-3 at the plate.
