Women's Basketball Comes Up Short to Mariners in Conference Matchup

Waterville, Maine - Women's Basketball would host the Maine Maritime Academy Mariners on Saturday, February 1st, in their final meeting of conference play, but would fall short by a score of 46-65. Sky Kubwalo would lead the Terriers in scoring, finishing with 19 points despite the loss.

Thomas: Overall (6-14), NAC (6-4)
Maine Maritime: Overall (17-4), NAC (10-0)

How it Happened:
  • Sky Kubwalo and Mollie Gray would get the Terriers offense going early in the first, each scoring in the paint to give the Terriers the early lead.
  • But the Mariners would be quick to respond, going on a small scoring run midway through the first quarter to reclaim the lead.
  • Kubwalo and Anabelle Morris would knock down three-pointers late in the first quarter, but the Terriers would find themselves down 13-19 heading into the second quarter.
  • The Mariners would pressure the Terriers on both sides of the ball in the second, opening the quarter with a scoring run to extend the Terriers deficit.
  • Yaribel Pena, Hana Isahac and Mariah Roberts would try to generate some momentum with points late in the second, but the Terriers would head into the half trailing 22-33.
  • The Mariners would continue to pressure the Terriers in the third, opening the quarter with an early 6-0 run. 
  • Pena, Gray and Kubwalo would continue to cut into the Mariners lead midway through the third quarter, each contributing to a seven point run for the Terriers.
  • But the Mariners would continue to pressure the Terriers on both sides of the ball late in the third, and would put the Terriers down 33-51 heading into the fourth quarter.
  • The Terriers would flip the momentum of the game early in the fourth, with Pena, Gray and Kubwalo each contributing to an early 10-0 run to cut the Mariners lead to just nine points with five minutes left in regulation.
  • But despite the Terriers strong comeback efforts, the Mariners would respond once again, going on a 12-2 scoring run in the final few minutes of play and would hold on to hand the Terriers a 46-65 conference loss.


What's Next: 
The Terriers will look to bounce back on Wednesday, February 5th, traveling to Bangor, Maine to take on the Husson University Eagles in a North Atlantic Conference contest. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 PM.
