Waterville, ME – Former NBA Head Coach Steve Clifford has been named the guest speaker for the 2024 Dick & Better-Jane Meader Athletics Hall of Fame induction and reception. This year will mark the 30
th year of the ceremony and will be held in the Thomas College Summit Room at 5:00 PM on October 18
th, 2024.
Steve Clifford is a highly respected figure in the world of basketball, celebrated for his contributions as a head coach in the NBA. His career is marked by resilience and a dedication to the game that has earned him respect across all the NBA and throughout the country. This has led to 208 regular season wins with the Charlotte Hornets, earning Clifford a franchise record. From his beginnings as an NCAA Division III student-athlete, to his current role inside the front office of the Hornets, Clifford's journey reflects his commitment to basketball and his ability to adapt and thrive in various playing and coaching environments.
Born on March 17, 1961, in Island Falls, Maine, Steve Clifford's passion for basketball emerged early. He played college basketball at fellow NCAA Division III school University of Maine Farmington, where his understanding of the game began to take shape. His playing career helped lay the groundwork for his future in coaching. After graduating, Clifford transitioned to a coaching role, starting at first at the high school level and then as an assistant coach at Saint Anselm College, where he began to hone his skills and develop his coaching philosophy.
Clifford's career took a significant turn when he joined the NBA as an assistant coach. His first notable role was with the New York Knicks, where he worked to absorb defensive strategies and emphasis on discipline. This period also included stints as an Assistant Coach with the Houston Rockets, Orlando Magic, and Los Angeles Lakers, further expanding his coaching knowledge and experience.
In 2013, Clifford's hard work and dedication culminated in his first head coaching position with the Charlotte Bobcats, which soon became the Charlotte Hornets. His tenure with the Hornets was marked by a focus on building a solid defensive foundation and developing young talent. Under his leadership, the Hornets made the playoffs in the 2015-2016 season, a significant achievement for the franchise. Clifford's ability to implement a strong defensive scheme and adapt his strategies to the strengths of his players was crucial in revitalizing the team.
Following his time with the Hornets, Clifford took on a new challenge with the Orlando Magic, beginning in 2018.
