Waterville, ME – Men's Basketball earned a hard-fought 94-88 win against the University of Maine Presque Isle on Tuesday, January 30
th, 2024. Both teams were evenly matched down the stretch, but some clutch free throws meant the Terriers were able to pull away for an important conference win.
Thomas College: Overall (8-13), NAC (5-6)
University of Maine Presque Isle: Overall (9-11), NAC (4-5)
How it Happened:
- The Owls started the game well, jumping out a 7-3 lead within the first three minutes.
- The Terriers were able to take back the lead five minutes later and extend upon it thanks to five quick points from Cooper Wirkala.
- Two straight three-point shots by Mark McDonald and Parker Desjardins saw the Terriers take a 26-21 lead halfway through the first half.
- The Owls tied things back up at 30 after a 9-4 run, but four straight points from Jackson Ruelke saw the Terriers retake the lead.
- The Terriers went on a 10-4 run to end the half, giving them a 46-40 lead going into the final 20 minutes.
- The second half was largely back-and-forth, with both teams trading points for the opening five minutes.
- With 15 minutes left to play the Owls went on a 10-0 run to tie the game up at 54.
- McDonald and Desjardins would once again hit successive three-point shots to take back a 60-54 lead.
- The Terriers extended their lead to 13 points with seven minutes left to play thanks to two free throws from Kory Winch.
- James Phelan would score nine straight points in a span of four minutes, giving the Terriers an 82-75 lead with just under two minutes to play.
- Some clutch free throw from Winch, Phelan, and Metin Yavuz in the final minute and a half meant the Terriers walked away with their fifth conference win of the season, 94-88.
