Alderman’s Big Fourth Quarter Propels Women’s Basketball Past Hornets

Waterville, ME – Elena Alderman scored nine points and added four steals in the fourth quarter to help Women's Basketball propel past the Vermont State University Lyndon Hornets 58-57 on Sunday, December 10th, 2023.

How it Happened:
  • The Terriers struggled to start, finding themselves in a 2-7 hole early in the first quarter. 
  • Hannah Coolen scored eight points in a three-minute stretch to give the Terriers a 18-12 lead after the end of the first quarter.
  • The Hornets would largely dominate the second quarter, limiting the Terriers to only seven points.
  • Sky Kubwalo would add four rebounds in the second quarter, but the Hornets battled back to tie the game at 25 at halftime.
  • The Hornets would go on a 11-2 run halfway through the third quarter that saw them retake the lead 36-31.
  • Coolen would go on to hit a three-point shot and adding a layup in the final four minutes to end the quarter down 41-36.
  • Yaribel Pena tied the game up at 41 a piece a minute and a half into the fourth quarter, scoring a layup and adding a three-point shot. 
  • With five minutes to go, the Terriers found themselves down by three, and were able to respond.
  • A 9-0 scoring run led by Alderman saw the Terriers retake the lead 52-49, but the Hornets scored five points in 30 seconds to take back the lead 54-52.
  • The Terriers would once again go on a scoring run, scoring six straight points, which included clutch free throws from Alderman and Coolen to effectively put the game to rest.
  • The Hornets would hit a late three-point shot, but the Terriers would walk away with a win 58-57. 

Inside the Stats:
  • Alderman scored nine of 15 points in the fourth quarter, while adding four of six total steals in the fourth quarter.  
  • Coolen would also go on to score 15 points, shooting 60% from beyond the three-point line.
  • The Terriers would get a combined 32 points off of their bench in the win.
  • The lead would change 10 times in the game, with the Terriers scoring 20 points off of turnovers to secure the win.

  • Women's Basketball will travel to Daytona Beach, Florida, to take on Bethel University in the Daytona Beach Shootout on Tuesday, December 19th, 2023. Tip-off is TBD.
