Men’s Soccer Earns Hard-Fought Victory Versus USM

Waterville, ME – Men's Soccer earned a hard-fought 2-1 victory over University of Southern Maine on Sunday, October 15th, 2023.

University of Southern Maine: Overall (4-9-3) LEC (2-4)

How it Happened:  
  • The Terriers started off the game with two chances in the seventh minute. Joshua Joseph had his shot saved by Husky goalkeeper Simon Gabaree, and 10 seconds later Micky Woodrow's shot sailed wide.
  • In the 12th minute, a Husky foul set up the Terriers in a promising free kick spot. Joseph beat the wall and blasted a shot into the top right of the Husky net to take a 1-0 lead.
  • In the 16th minute, Craig Coventry had his shot saved by Gabaree, which prevented a good scoring opportunity.
  • In the 33rd minute, The Huskies equalized off a long-range shot just outside the Terrier 18-yard box.
  • The Huskies largely dominated the first half after their goal, taking three shots in the time remaining before halftime.
  • The Terriers came out of the halftime break on a mission and scored within three minutes. Jack Thompson played a perfectly time through ball to Joseph, who slotted the ball into the right corner to give the Terriers a 2-1 lead.
  • In the 62nd minute, Harry Clough took a shot from distance, but Husky goalkeeper Patrick Mansir was able to make a good save to keep the game in reach.
  • The next opportunity was in the 78th minute. The Terriers took three shots within a minute and a half, forcing two saves from Mansir.
  • The Terriers hung on for the final 10 minutes, earning a hard-fought 2-1 victory.
  • The Terriers outshot the Huskies 16-14 in the win.

The Goalkeepers:  

Matthew Gosselin got the start, and played all 90 minutes for the Terriers, making three saves.

Three Husky goalkeepers saw time in net tonight. Gabaree got the start, making two saves in 31 minutes played. Joshua Nagle played 29 minutes and made two saves. Mansir played the final 28 minutes, making four saves.

What's Next:

The Terriers will look to continue their success as they face off against Maine Maritime Academy at home on Wednesday, October 18th, 2023. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 PM.
