COBLESKILL, N.Y. - Thomas College avenged their 23-4 loss to SUNY Cobleskill in Game 2 with a 24-8 win in a rematch in Game 5.
Cobleskill opened the scoring with a run in the first inning, but the Thomas offense exploded for six runs in the second and nine runs in the third to build a lead from which SUNY Cobleskill couldn't recover.
The Fighting Tigers clawed their way back with five runs in the fourth and fifth innings to cut the Terriers' lead to nine, but Thomas didn't relent and tacked on nine runs through the seventh inning. Cobleskill had 11 hits with five doubles and a home run, but they couldn't keep up with the Thomas onslaught totaling 22 hits with three doubles and two home runs.
Outfielders led the day for Thomas. Leftfielder
Devin Grindle (Surry, Maine) had a career day, going 4-for-4 with a double, two home runs, seven RBIs, and five runs scored. Right fielder
Kyle Gleason went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI, and four runs. Centerfielder
Austin Stebbins (Farmingdale, Maine) knocked in two runs and scored twice on a 3-for-5 afternoon. Third baseman
Tony Meza (Los Angeles, Calif.) chipped in with a double, three RBIs, and three runs scored.
Zach Nickerson (Fairfield, Maine) earned the win on the mound while
Andrew Pruell (Warren, Maine) picked up a 3.1 inning save.Â
Thomas advances to the championship showdown with Husson University. The Eagles will win the championship if they win Game 6 at 11:00. #2 Thomas will force Game 7 thirty minutes later for all the marbles if they upset #1 Husson in Game 6.
