Softball dominate in NAC tourney opener against Hornets

BANGOR, Maine - Thomas softball was dominant in their first NAC tournament game on Friday morning, beating the NVU-Lyndon Hornets 16-0, setting up a date with the first seeded Eagles on Friday afternoon.

The first inning and half was quiet for both teams offensively, as they felt out the opposing pitchers. The Terriers bats came alive in the bottom of the second inning when they scored seven runs. Kasey Champney (Holland, Vt.) kicked things off when she reached first on an error to score Claudia Migliaccio (Brooklyn, N.Y.). Riley Giblin (Bristol, Conn.) came up next and also reached on an error to score Kaylee Fonseca (Seekonk, Mass.). Kelsey Currier (Cumberland, Maine), Bailey Dunphy (North Anson, Maine) and Maddie Rock (Bridgton, Maine) also contributed hits in the second inning.

The Terriers did not stop there, scoring nine more runs in the next inning. Anna Piirainen (West Paris, Maine) kicked things off, reaching first on a muffed throw by the Hornets, to help bring two runs home. Migliaccio came up to bat next, singling up the middle, to score Dunphy and Piirainen. Giblin added a single while Piirainen and Dunphy both drew walks in the inning.

Currier, Dunphy, Migliaccio, and Simpson all had two hits for Thomas in the win. Jordan Devine (Belgrade, Maine) picked up her fifth win in a row this season, pitching a complete game. She allowed just three hits, striking out four, and walking just one.

Thomas will take on Husson at 2 p.m. today. The Terriers and Eagles split their regular season meetings in Waterville. Thomas was the only conference team able to beat Husson in the regular season, beating them 1-0 in nine innings.
