WATERVILLE, Maine - Baseball split their doubleheader with University of Maine at Farmington to open up their North Atlantic Conference season.
Game 1: Thomas 1 UMaine Farmington 2
The first game was a pitching duel between the Terriers'
Dylan Copeland (Salisbury, Mass.) and the Beavers' Will Harriman. Thomas got on the board first when
Aaron Young (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.) singled to center field, scoring
Kyle Gleason (Danville, N.H.). UMaine Farmington tied the game in the top of the second and took the lead in the fifth inning.
Matt Seymour (Old Town, Maine) led the Terriers' offense with two hits while five players each had one hit. Copeland pitched a complete game allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out two and walking two.
Game 2: Thomas 22 UMaine Farmington 5
Thomas' bats came alive early in the second game as they cruised to the win. It all started when Gleason walked in the first inning and then successfully stealing second base. Two batters later Young hit a double scoring two runs to give the Terriers a 2-0 lead.
The Terriers padded their lead with six runs in each the second and third innings to pull away from the Beavers for good.. Thomas' second inning efforts included a slew of singles as well as a double by
Devin Grindle (Surry, Maine) and a triple by
Tommy Smith (Cumming, Ga.). The third inning saw three more singles as well as a double by
Ryan Kappelmann (Auburn, Maine).
Tony Meza (Los Angeles, Calif.) led the Thomas bats with four hits, four RBIs, and four runs scored.
Jarrad Willette (Concord, N.H.) and Gleason both had three hits while Grindle and Young had two each.
Garrison Paillet (Coconut Creek, Fla.) picked up his third win of the season on the mound, going four and two thirds inning, allowing two runs and striking out an impressive six.
James Lappin (Geelong, Victoria, Australia) and
Alex Avila (Auburn, Maine) came in after Paillet, only giving up one hit in two and thirds innings.
