Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Men's tennis gets second victory of the season over Hornets

WATERVILLE, Maine - Thomas men's tennis beat NVU-Lyndon for a second time this season on Tuesday, this time beating the Hornets 7-2.

The Terriers started out strong in doubles, sweeping all three matches. Jose Afonso (Tenerife, Spain) and Gabe McPhail (Windham, ME) cruised at #1 doubles 8-3. The other two doubles were tight with Rajhan Munnings (Providenciales, Turks and Caicos) and Liam Gould (Freeport, Maine) winning 8-5 at #2 and Kegan Rodrigue (Auburn, Maine) and Caleb Daigneault (Cornville, Maine) won at #3 by a score of 8-5.

Gould won the first singles point for Thomas at #2 beating Zach Falkenburg 6-2, 6-2. Gould had lost in a close two setter to Falkenburg at Lydon nine days ago. McPhail was the second to finish at #3 singles, winning 6-1 6-3.

Afonso pulled out a three set win at #1 singles over a tricky lefty in Patrick Wickstrom. Afonso won the first set 6-4 but Wickstrom came back to win the second set 6-2. Afonso was able to regain his form to take the final set 6-3 in the longest match of the day.

Sophomore Daigneault won his first singles match of his career at #6 singles defeating Bobby Saba 6-1, 6-4. He went down 1-4 in the second set before he was able to reel off 5 straight games for the win. Daigneault got revenge for his loss to Saba at Lyndon earlier in the season, where he lost 6-4 6-2.

UP NEXT: The Terriers will host NVU-Johnson on Thursday in a doubleheader with the first match scheduled for 1 p.m.
