Softball picks up pair of statement wins against Hornets, extend win streak to five

LYNDON, Vt. - Thomas softball picked up a pair of statement wins against NVU-Lyndon on Saturday, extending their win streak to five games.

Game One: Thomas 10 NVU-Lyndon  5

The Terriers got their bats going early, putting up five runs in the first inning. Maddie Rock (Bridgton, Maine) singled to left field to get the first run on the board.  Two batters later Kaylee Fonseca (Seekonk, Mass.) singled to score two more runs followed by Kasey Champney (Holland, Vt.) hitting a two run home run to left field.

Thomas tacked on two more runs in the second inning and three more runs in the fourth inning to put the game out of reach for the Hornets. Claudia Migliaccio (Brooklyn, N.Y.) picked up her second win of the season on the mound, pitching all seven innings. She allowed just one earned run on seven hits, and striking out three.

Rock led the team with two hits that drove in five runs. Kaylee Fonseca (Seekonk, Mass.) had two hits and two RBIs while Champney had the two RBIs from her home run.

Game Two: Thomas 21 NVU-Lyndon  2  (5  innings)

Thomas' bats only got hotter in game two, scoring eight runs in the first inning. It all started when Kelsey Currier (Cumberland, Maine) scored on a wild pitch and then Makayla Panich (Windham, N.H.) and Katie Splaine (Pelham, N.H.) had a pair of singles, to each bring home one run. Champney and Rock both added doubles in the first frame to help put the Terriers firmly in control.

They added two more runs in the second inning to extend their commanding lead to 11-0 before another offensive explosion in the third inning, scoring an impressive seven more runs. Teresa McLinden (Brooklyn, N.Y.) singled to center to score Panich. Both Panich and Audra Bean (Milton Township, Maine) doubled to left field with Panich driving in three runs and Bean driving in two.

Jordan Devine (Belgrade, Maine) picked up her second win in two days, pitching all five innings allowing two runs on four hits while striking out five. Rock and Panich both had four RBIs and scored two runs in game two. Anna Piirainen (West Paris, Maine) contributed two hits, two RBIs, and two runs scored.

The 22 runs was the most Thomas has scored since April 11th, 2020 when they beat NVU-Johnson 23-0. The Terriers also set a season high for hits, RBIs and doubles in their dominant game two victory.

UP NEXT: The Terriers will finish up their regular season tomorrow against NVU-Johnson with game one of the doubleheader scheduled to start at noon.
