WATERVILLE, Maine - Thomas softball swept their doubleheader against the University of Maine at Presque Isle on Friday, as they enter their busiest weekend of the season.
Game One: Thomas 10 UMPI 2 (5 innings)
Thomas didn't waste any time getting on the board, scoring their first run in the bottom of the first inning, when
Bailey Dunphy (North Anson, Maine) tripled to center field to score
Kelsey Currier (Cumberland, Maine). Thomas tacked on two more runs in the second inning including another triple, this time by
Cheyenne Simpson (Peyton, Colo.)
The Owls got one run back in the third and one run in the fifth but the Terriers found their bats in the fifth inning, scoring an impressive seven runs, to end the game after five innings. Both
Kayla Duhaime (Ellsworth, Maine) and
Riley Giblin (Bristol, Conn.) both hit three run home runs in the inning.
Currier, Dunphy and
Kasey Champney (Holland, Vt.) all had two hits and one RBI each.
Jordan Devine (Belgrade, Maine) picked up her second win of the season on the mound for Thomas. She pitched four innings, allowing one run on three hits, and striking out four.
Claudia Migliaccio (Brooklyn, N.Y.) pitched the final inning for Thomas allowing one run on three hits, and striking out two.
Game Two: Thomas 3 UMPI 2 (7 innings)
The second game was a low scoring affair, in part to some great pitching by Currier. Thomas scored one run in three different innings to take a 3-0 lead into the seventh inning including two runs off of sacrifice flies. The Owls were able to get two runs back in the top of the seventh and had the tying run at third base but Currier was able to strike out the final batter to lead her team to the victory.
Anna Piirainen (West Paris, Maine) had two hits, one RBI, and scored one run in the tight victory. Duhaime and Rock each added one RBI with sacrifice flies. Currier pitched all seven innings, allowing two runs on three hits while striking out seven and walking zero batters. She improves to 8-5 this season with an ERA of 3.00 and a WHIP of 1.18.
UP NEXT: The Terriers travel to Vermont to take on NVU-Lyndon in a doubleheader on Saturday followed by a doubleheader against NVU-Johnson on Sunday to close out their regular season.
