FARMINGTON, Maine - Thomas softball dominated the University of Maine at Farmington 8-0 in their North Atlantic Conference opener, with an impressive showing on offense and defense.
The Terriers had not played a game in eight days but you would not have been able to tell from their play on Wednesday afternoon.
Kelsey Currier (Cumberland, Maine) pitched a one hitter, striking out six in five innings of work while the offense produced 11 hits. Thomas' defensive efforts were also impressive, making zero errors.
Thomas put up runs in the first four innings. They scored one run in the first inning when
Anna Piirainen (West Paris, Maine) crossed home plate. The Terriers kicked off the second inning with a single by
Kasey Champney (Holland, Vt.) and a double by
Makayla Panich (Windham, N.H.).
Kayla Duhaime (Ellsworth, Maine) came up next hitting a sacrifice fly to bring Champney home. A few batters later
Cheyenne Simpson (Peyton, Colo.) stole second and Panich scored on the throw.
They added two more runs in the third inning to take a commanding 5-0 lead. The Terriers biggest inning came in the fourth inning when they scored three runs. Simpson started things off with a single, two batters later Piirainen was able to drive Simpson home on a single. Two batters later
Maddie Rock (Bridgton, Maine) was able to single up the middle to bring Piirainen home, with the last run coming off of a throwing error by the Beaver's catcher. The game ended after five innings because Thomas had an eight run lead.
Bailey Dunphy (North Anson, Maine) and Piirainen led the team with three hits and two runs scored each. Rock added two hits, one RBI and one run scored. Seven different players got hits for Thomas in the win
