WATERVILLE, Maine. - Thomas split their Easter doubleheader with University of Maine at Presque Isle, winning in game one with their bats and falling in a pitchers battle in game two.
Game One: Thomas 11 UMPI 6
The Terriers got on the board first with three runs in the first inning.
Tony Meza (Los Angeles, Calif.) drove in one run while
Devin Grindle (Surry, Maine) singled to bring in two runs. The Owls tied things up in the third but Thomas was not done pouring on the offense.
Thomas found their bats again in the fifth, with
Aaron Young kicking things off with a single, bringing
Austin Stebbins (Farmingdale, Maine) across home plate. Grindle followed up his single with a double to center field to give the Terriers a 5-3 lead.
Ryan Kappelmann (Auburn, Maine) scored during the next at bat on a passed ball to extend their lead to 6-3.
UMPI got one run back in the sixth but Thomas' offense had another surge in the sixth inning putting up five runs. The Owls put some hits together in the top of the seventh but
James Lappin (Geelong, Victoria, Australia) was able to extinguish the threat and close out the game.
Grindle led Thomas' offensive efforts with three hits and three RBIs. Young contributed three hits and two RBIs while Kappleman had three hits and one RBI.
Tommy Smith (Cumming, Ga.) got the win for the Terriers going 5 1/3 innings, allowing four runs on six hits, and striking out three.
Game Two: Thomas 0 UMPI 1
The pitching was on display in the second game with both teams. The game was scoreless until the fourth inning when the Owls got on the board.
Tyler Cantey (Los Angeles, Calif.) got the start for the Terriers, going four innings, allowing one run on five hits, and striking out three.
Isaiah Williams (Valley Springs, Calif.) relieved Cantey in the fifth inning, pitching 1 2/3 innings, allowing just one hit, striking out three and walking three.
Andrew Pruell (Warren, Maine) finished the game on the mound, allowing no hits, striking out one and walking one.
The Terriers threatened in the bottom of the seventh, getting a runner to second base but were unable to advance him any further, falling in a hard fought battle.
Kyle Gleason (Danville, N.H.) had two hits in the loss for Thomas.
UP NEXT: The Terriers will travel to Bangor to take on Husson in a doubleheader on Tuesday, with the first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m.
