Thomas Softball follows up to loss to Berea with dominating performance against Penn State Hazleton

CLERMONT, Fla. - Thomas Softball (2-2) split their spring break games on Monday, dropping their first game to Berea College 9-6 before dominating Penn State Hazleton 5-1. 

The first game against the Mountaineers was a high scoring affair that saw Thomas jump out to a lead twice but was unable to hold on. Kelsey Currier (Cumberland, Maine) doubled to left field to score Anna Piirainen (West Paris, Maine) to put the Terriers on the board in the first inning. Riley Giblin (Bristol, Conn.) came up next and was able to hit a single, scoring Kasey Champney (Holland, Vt.), and giving the Terriers a 2-0 lead.  

Berea came storming back in the bottom of the first inning, scoring five runs. Thomas would answer again in the top of the second inning when Piirainen hit a bases clearing double to give them a 5-4 lead. Unfortunately for Thomas they were not able to score again after the second inning and the Mountaineers were able to score one run in the second inning to tie the game up and three more in the sixth to seal the victory.  

Champney and Piirainen combined for five out of the six RBIs for the Terriers in the loss. Hayleigh Gnagie led Berea with two hits and three RBIs while Madison McIntosh added a hit and two RBIs.  

Katie Splaine (Pelham, N.H.) got the start for Thomas going two and two thirds inning allowing six runs on five hits, walking three and striking out one. Jordan Devine (Belgrade, Maine) relieved Splaine in the second inning, going two and a thirds inning allowing three runs on three hits while striking out one and walking one. Gibbins finished the game for the Terriers, allowing just two hits in her inning of work.  picked up the loss for the Terriers.  

Thomas dominated their second game against Penn State Hazleton, beating the Lions 5-1. The win came behind a solid pitching performance by Currier and stellar defense that saw them commit zero errors.  

Maddie Rock (Bridgton, Maine) hit a sac fly to open the scoring in the first inning. Thomas added two more runs in the third inning off two miscues by the Lions defense. Bailey Dunphy's (North Anson, Maine) single in the sixth inning cushioned the Terriers lead. 

Dunphy and Piirainen led the Thomas offense with three hits each. Currier went six innings allowing zero runs on five hits and striking out an impressive nine batters. Claudia Migliaccio (Brooklyn, N.Y.) pitched the final inning allowing one run on three hits.  
 
UP NEXT: The Terriers are back in action on Tuesday playing Otterbein University at 9 a.m. followed by University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg at 11:15 a.m.
