AUBURNDALE, Fla. - Thomas baseball fell in two close games on Sunday against Marian University. The Sabres won the first game 3-1 and prevailed 8-5 in the second game.
Game one was all about the pitching with Marian able to squeak out just a few more runs. Marian scattered their three runs over three innings while Thomas scored their only run in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Ryan Kappelmann (Auburn, Maine),
Brad Smith (Ellsworth, Maine), and
Aaron Young (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.) each collected one hit to lead the Terriers.
First year
Tommy Smith (Cumming, Ga.) got the start for the Terriers, going six innings allowing two runs, seven hits, striking out five while walking just one. Jonah Landowski pitched a complete game for the Sabres allowing one run, three hits, striking out seven and walking four.
Marian jumped out to a six-run lead after the first two innings of game two and Thomas was never able to catch back up. Thomas was able to score three runs in the seventh inning to cut the lead down to three runs but was unable to complete the comeback.
Jarrad Willette (Concord, N.H.) singled on a line drive to right field to score
Jackson Ladd (Winthop, Maine) and
Devin Grindle (Surry, Maine) to kick off the Terrier's scoring in the seventh inning. One batter later
Jason Bartlett (Belfast, Maine) hit a double to score Willette.
First year
Isaiah Williams (Valley Springs, Calif.) got the start on the mound for the Terriers, going two innings allowing six hits and six runs while striking out three. Thomas used four different pitchers to finish the game. Taylor Middaugh picked up the wins for the Sabres, going six innings, allowing two runs on seven hits.
