Baseball falters in season opener against Calvin

SANFORD, FLA. - Thomas baseball lost both games against Calvin University in their season opener on Saturday, losing the first game 6-5 and the second game 19-5. 

The Terriers got off to a strong start in the first game of the double header, scoring two runs in the first inning off of a Nick Hutson (Queens, N.Y.) single. The Knights tied things up in the second inning when J.C. Fortmann singled on the first pitch of his at bat, scoring two runs. 

Calvin scored one run in both the fifth and sixth inning to take a two run lead but Thomas would answer right back in the bottom of the sixth, scoring three runs. Unfortunately for the Terriers, their lead would not last, Rick Padilla doubled in the top of the seventh inning, scoring two runs and sealing the win for the Knights. 

Dylan Copeland (Salisbury, Mass.) started the game for Thomas, going five and two thirds inning, allowing five hits, and four runs, two of which were earned. Tony Meza (Los Angeles, Calif.) picked up the loss for the Terriers, pitching one inning and allowing two runs. 

In the second game the Knights got out to a quick 7-0 lead in the first two innings and was able to maintain their lead eventually winning 19-5. Thomas put up five runs in the third inning but was unable to complete the comeback. Calvin put up another five runs in the third inning and fifth inning to put the game out of reach for the Terriers. 

Garrison Paillet (Coconut Creek, Fla.) took the loss for Thomas, surrendering seven runs on four hits over two innings, striking out two.  Ian Doyle picked up the win for the Knights, giving up five runs on five hits over two and third innings. Both teams used a platoon of relievers to finish the game.  

UP NEXT: The Terriers are back in action tomorrow for another doubleheader this time against Marian University, first pitch is scheduled for 9:15 a.m.
